Royal Union Saint-Gilloise

When I moved to Brussels, I was looking for a football club to follow where I could throw myself fully into the dizzy highs and crippling lows up close and personal, rather than from home or at the pub as was so often the case back home in Liverpool.

Royal Union Saint-Gilloise fit the bill perfectly: a club with a huge history and a small but diverse fanbase of people from all over. To be honest, I had made the decision before we moved here in part because Liverpool had played them the season before and they were exciting and interesting, but it was their history and that hunt for community that solidified that call.

Fast forward nearly 12 months and I’ve been to around 15 games so far, including away days, met loads of people from all over the world, and was a part of this historic moment: the club’s first title win in 90 years.

I decided when the Championship Playoffs came around, I’d be there with my camera to document some of the games, and hopefully the historic moment of Union lifting the title. I was not disappointed.

How it Went

I only really wanted to take the photos for myself, as memories of the incredible experience I’ve had following the team.

However, when I posted the photos I received so much positive and kind feedback from people all over the world, leading to collaborations with The Atlantic Dispatch, Cult Kits, and Stadium Regulars.

This has led me to thinking of other clubs I’d love to go and take pictures for over the next season - and hopefully the opportunity arises to do so.
